Ryan's mother had a meeting with our local MP today, to try and get his support for this petition. He was very helpful in our campaign to get the law changed regarding how long a body can be kept before burial. As you know we managed to get that law changed, so lets hope that we can do it once again.
I was amazed to discover that our MP didn't realise that the Judges recommendation as to how long a prisoner serves before he can apply for parole, counts for nothing. Once the prisoner is sentenced, it is down to the prison service and parole board as to when he is released. Do the Judges know this? This is another sneaky law that this government has slipped in without anyone noticing.
Our MP is now going to make enquiries as to what is exactly going on with prisoner releases. A prisoner can get sentenced to 30 years and the Judge can recommend he serve 15 years before being eligible for parole. He may just as well save his breath. If the prison service so wish, they can release him after just one year! What has the justice system come to in this country? We need murderers, rapists and child abusers locked up for a very long time with no automatic parole. Give these vile people the punishment that they deserve.
A punishment handed down by a learned Judge can be reduced to practically nothing by a group of unelected wierdos whose heads are full of magic.
If the powers that be want to learn what the majority of people in this country want from the Criminal Justice System, I urge them to read the comments left on the petition web site. If they think that the people of this country think the same way as they do, they will quickly realise how wrong they are. The people of this country do not want child killers, rapists, paedophiles, and other pieces of scum released part way through a joke of a sentence. They want full and exemplary terms handed down to these people, with no automatic parole. This would be a start in restoring faith in our justice system.
And what about the farce of this scumbag who murdered Phillip Lawrence who will now be released early and allowed to stay in this country, even though he is an Italian national? The human rights act is quoted.
Has this government no shame? Repeal this obnoxious piece of legislation and give human rights back to the families of victims of violent crime. Despite the outcry from every right minded person in this country, I know that nothing will be done. It seems that this is what the government want. After all, who appointed the members of this panel that made this decision? Why, our old friend Tony Bliar. And who is the chairman of this panel? Why, nobody but the husband of a cabinet minister. And you think that this is not government policy?
And further to the above, a very important ruling by the High Court was made today. It says, "The parole board is not sufficiently independent of the government...........the board was too close to the government and its decisions were not objective." This ruling is going to have great repercussions, and naturally the Ministry of Justice(sic) is going to appeal against it. It is what I and others have been saying all along, the parole board is appointed and paid by the government and does as it is told. Independent!! In the words of a great philosopher - "Independent, my arse!"
We are starting another petition to get the law changed so that a child killer does not get released automatically half way through the sentence. Does the dead child come back to life at this point? Of course he doesn't. Then why should the killer get early release?
Because the jails are full is no reason. Build more jails. Please sign our petition. It will be presented to Gordon Brown.
I had a very nice letter today from my MP. He enclosed a letter from the Right Hon. David Hansen MP, Minister of State for Justice(sic). And a very interesting letter it was too. A few of his remarks I would like to pass comment on.
"The government does not plan to change the current early release arrangements for prisoners so that they serve their full sentences."
The vast majority of people in this country are sick and tired of reading how murderers, rapists and other assorted pieces of scum are being released from prison early. Apart from the fact that most of our leaders are stone bonkers with their heads full of magic, we know that the main reason if because this government, ie Gordon Brown, refused to spend the money to build more prisons.
So the people of this country have to live in fear because Gordon would not supply the money. Now I wonder what takes priority over the safety of the people? How many billions has he wasted on useless projects. There is more meaning less legalspeak, for example, "Offenders convicted of specific sexual and violent offences are to be assessed by the court as to whether or not they are fit to be released" and "..also introduced new sentences for public protection in acknowledgment of the fact that the public must be protected from dangerous criminals."
Now doesn't that sound just dandy, but the truth is in the detail. The prisoners are not assessed by a court, but by a parole board, and who appoint the members of the parole board? Well what a surprise - its the government. The courts have nothing to do with it, it is up to the prison service as to when a prisoner is released. And at the moment it is halfway through the sentence, regardless of what term the judge recommends. This bit about "new sentences for public protection" and "the public must be protected from dangerous criminals", this man is having a laugh. Next thing will be the "Tough on Crime" mantra coming from Westminster.
This government lurches from one disaster to another, the sooner they go the better. If Gordon Brown wants to "connect with the people", then for a start he should read the comments that have been left on our petition site. It breaks my heart to see what the so called Labour party are doing to this country.
My MP who has been very helpful, has forwarded my views to the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, Nick Herbert MP.I think that some of us are finally getting through to politicians. The Conservatives have announced today that once back in power, they will introduce a zero tolerance policy against yobbos, and end the mockery of criminals being released early. Initially prison ships and disused army camps will be used to ensure inmates see out their sentence.
He also promised to abolish that evil piece of legislation, the human rights act. Other things are also promised, so it seems that once in power, the law will revert back to be in favour of the law abiding. So keep up your various petitions and campaigns, because we are finally getting through to the people at Westminster
